Travel Insurance

Did I grab your attention with that sexy title? This is one of those more glamorous things travel advisors help our clients with.

Now, more than ever, insurance is key. Many plans will cover you if you get sick when traveling but they do not cover a “fear of catching an illness.” As in, you will not be covered for canceling your trip because of an increase in Covid rates where you are going. They will cover catching Covid before or during travel just like they would with the flu. There are nuances to Covid related coverage. If things like famous sites close down due to covid restrictions or curfews are in place, that usually isn’t covered.

Cancel for Any Reason plans are expensive and can be cost prohibitive for some. There is an added premium based on the trip cost and they allow you to get a percentage but not all of your money back if canceling for uncovered reasons. Furthermore, Covid-19 is classified as a foreseeable event and often not covered as the reason for canceling a trip. However, you can cancel because you are worried it will rain (that would be a case where you only get back a percentage)… Insurance companies expect the suppliers to refund or provide future travel vouchers in many cases while the suppliers expect insurance to pay (sounds like fun right?). There are lots of nuances that vary by trip.

If you’re traveling a lot, an annual plan may make more sense for you. However, minor children are not covered for free under those plans so many parents opt for the plan that includes the littles for free (kids are expensive!).

While travel advisors can price policy options we think will work for our clients, it is crucial that the client calls the insurer to question what exactly they need covered (canceled childcare, an elderly roommate, a sick relative, unforeseen job requirements, etc.). Many State laws do not allow travel advisors or even insurance company employees to answer on their behalf and you must speak with the underwriters.

I admit that before I had my kids, I skipped the insurance. Between that and covid, I have purchased it for all of my trips the last few years. I even had to make a claim from our most recent adventure. My son knows I’m very dedicated to my job and thought I needed first hand experience so I can better help my clients… Put my stress and experience to work for you on your next trip!
